Much like tube bending and end forming, many of the same machines used for those processes can also be used for tube cutting. Similarly, to those processes as well, tube cutting can be accomplished in a number of ways and requires a specific set of tube and pipe benders cutting tooling.
Types of Tube Cutting
One of the most common types of tube cutting is tube sawing. With this method of cutting the tube is cut using saw tooling that cuts within a 1mm profile tolerance. This method, unfortunately, creates a lot of clean-up. Shavings and chips are created during the cut, resulting in both material loss and clean-up.
Blade shearing is another tube cutting option that offers users the advantage of speed. Typically blade shearing machine cycle times are only 4-5 seconds. Similarly, dual blade shearing cycle times typically run 4-6 seconds. However, dual blade shearing requires the use of two perishable blades.
Other types of cutting are accomplished with rotary shear tooling, facing, and chamfer tooling. When rotary shear tooling is used, the tools oscillate to fracture the outside wall of the tubing. Rotary facing and chamfering, by contrast, squares or chamfers the end of a round tube to prepare the cut end for the next forming process.
Tube and Pipe Benders Cutting Tooling
Specific tube and pipe bender cutting tooling for each of the above processes is required. Saws, blades, rotary shear tooling, and spin cut tooling are all necessary to complete any of the above types of cutting methods. As with all bending processes, it is vital that you choose the correct tooling for not only your machine but also your requirements.
